MENOPAUSE – natural menopause is the transition between perimenopause and postmenopause, the entire process culminating with cessation of the menses, generally around age 50

PERIMENOPAUSE – the phase before menopause actually takes place, when ovarian hormone production is declining and fluctuating; can begin anytime between ages 35-45

PREMATURE / SURGICAL MENOPAUSE – menstruation ceases as the result of surgical intervention, namely a hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy (both ovaries are removed) or due to medical intervention to treat cancer which causes women to go into temporary or permanent menopause

POSTMENOPAUSE – when menstruation has ceased (usually not official until 12 months without periods), occurring at the average age of 52
