Who We Are and Why We're Here...

ProjectAWARE was created by women, for women.

The "Association of Women for the Advancement of Research & Education" was an idea born out of frustration, frustration regarding lack of beneficial and comprehensive health care information available to women today. So two women—one from Kansas and one from New York—with the same idea came together in an effort to get that information to as many women as possible.

That was in 1997. ProjectAWARE has grown to the website you see today, maintained by 8 dedicated people, some of whom are health professionals. Mostly Americans, we hail from several parts of the US and the world—from California to Canada to Thailand (our website editor is a transplanted Iowan living in Bangkok). Perhaps what makes ProjectAWARE even more special is that everyone is a volunteer.

In 1998 ProjectAWARE became a nonprofit corporation based in Kansas. However, we all work as a team from our home computers. Not always easy, but we manage!

To cover the costs involved in keeping an Internet presence, ProjectAWARE has come to rely on financial donations of sponsors, supporters, and friends. Our content is is no way driven, or influenced by, any of the sponsors whose logos appear on our site.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1997, Project AWARE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing menopausal and premenopausal women with complete and comprehensive information regarding all resources, therapies, and research data currently available, so that armed with this knowledge, women can make informed decisions regarding every healthcare option.

Our fervent hope is that the following goals will further this ideal.

Goals

  • Provide information, support and assistance to women at every phase of their journey through menopause using all possible means; reading lists, internet resources, identifying well-informed doctors, speaking at women's groups and conferences and helping women link to support groups in their own areas.
  • Encourage and foster an increase in clinical research into perimenopausal/menopausal related issues, including research into the effectiveness of natural hormones, in various modes of administration, to relieve symptoms of menopause; to help prevent cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis and other diseases or conditions associated with low or imbalanced levels of hormones in the body.
  • Disseminate current and relevant research findings to the medical community and to women directly by all possible means.
  • Bring about profound changes in the "medical management" of perimenopause and menopause and foster improvement of general healthcare in the lives of all women.
