Just what can I expect?

having irregular periods and just within the past few weeks have been

I have often wondered if family history has anything to do with what
I experience as I go through this "Change of Life" stuff. My
mother died at age 35 of an accident, her mother never spoke of her experience
with menopause, her sister won't speak of it, and I have learned that
whatever my sister says cannot be trusted.
So - just what can I expect? I have long been experiencing what I now
assume to be hot flashes (is anyone ELSE hot in here?). I do not "do"
hot summer weather, and for years my memory has been very bad.
Lately, however, I have been having irregular periods and just within
the past few weeks have been waking up all sweaty. Should I just go ahead
and assume I am in menopause? How can I question my aunt in a way that
will help her open up? And just when is a heavy period “heavy”?
I've always been a heavy bleeder, with clotting, during my periods.
Sure do wish my mom were here........
